Conjecture Mine Remediation Project

MIne The removal action for the Conjecture Mine is being performed to mitigate the release of hazardous substances, including arsenic, lead, and manganese, from waste rock dumps and sediment along Gold Creek. The removal action is involving the removal of contaminated mine waste materials from the site for deposition in a nearby waste repository and the construction of a clean stream corridor for Gold Creek.

The removal action at Conjecture Mine is part of a comprehensive approach by EPA and the United States Forest Service to address mine waste contaminants in the Gold Creek watershed. The Conjecture Mine site, which is situated near the headwaters of Gold Creek, extends more than one-third mile along Gold Creek. The upper portion of the site contains four large waste rock dumps, scattered deposits of disturbed and eroded materials, and stream sediments. The North Dump is the largest waste dump at the site and is bisected by Gold Creek. A waste rock dump on the southwest side of the site, referred to herein as Southwest Waste Rock Dump, forms the western bank of Gold Creek, and a third waste rock dump, Mid-South Waste Rock Dump is located on the south side of the site between Gold Creek and a Gold Creek tributary. The fourth dump, the Southeast Waste Rock Dump, is located below two collapsed adits east of the Gold Creek tributary.

FINISHED CREEKApproximately 40,000 loose yd3 of waste materials is being removed in these locations for deposit in the nearby USFS repository.  Identification of mine-waste materials for removal will be accomplished by field screening, including visual observation and analysis by field portable x-ray fluorescence (FPXRF). An estimated amount of 2 feet of over-excavation is expected and is included in the volume estimates. Following removal of the contaminated materials, the excavated areas is being backfilled as necessary using fill from borrow sites on USFS land in the vicinity of the site approximately 40,000 yd3 of topsoil. The ultimate goal is to create a clean stream corridor along Gold Creek and its tributaries in these areas.

A clean stream corridor has been constructed for Gold Creek and its tributaries restoring the hydraulic capacity and preventing erosion and liberation of metals contamination. Construction of this corridor included removal of approximately 7,500 yd3 of contaminated sediment and reshaping the topography to allow the water to flow through a clean and stable corridor. Regrading efforts are substantial, and include moving roughly 100,000 yd3 of material, to prevent waste rock from coming into contact with surface water.

The entire crew is staying onsite in a 25 room mobile camp with two cooks that take care of all meals. The entire site is completely self-contained with lodging, food, satellite internet, satellite phones and cell phone boosters.
