BOF MACT & Blast Furnace MACT Detailed Engineering

This project provided engineering design from concept to final detailed engineering of both primary and secondary systems for 3 BOF's. Some of the major tasks of the project were:

  • Perform a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model to identify volume, heat and velocity of the secondary emissions during charging and tapping of the BOF vessels. This model assisted in the design of the collection hoods and ductwork for the secondary collection system.
  • Develop a +/- 20% Total Installed Cost Estimate for the Secondary System and all other identified modifications and/or additions to the existing emissions control equipment to bring the BOF shop within MACT compliance. This estimate was the basis for a Capital Appropriation Request to the company’s Board of Directors.
  • Complete all engineering developed during the Preliminary Engineering Phase for installation by a contractor or plant forces.
  • Complete a detailed schedule for the project and will maintain it during construction.
  • Compile and distribute bid packages to contractors. Will Perform technical bid analysis and give recommendations to ISG.
  • Provide Construction Assistance or Management during installation (if requested).
  • Assist in start-up and commissioning of the new MACT Compliance System.
  • Write Operating and Maintenance manuals for new MACT Compliance System.
  • Develop training program and materials and provide training for operators and maintenance personnel.

Waste Water Treatment Plant Modifications at a Slag Plant

Performed a study to determine if an existing abandoned wastewater treatment plant could be economically reused for a new wastewater treatment facility. Developed P& I diagrams, obtained equipment costs and rehabilitation costs for the plant. Developed a total installed cost for renovating the existing plant that resulted in over $1 million dollars in savings for the client, versus putting up a new waste water treatment facility. As a result of this study EQE received the order to do detailed engineering for the renovation of the wastewater treatment plant. The following engineering services are included:

  • Demolition of non-essential parts of the plant
  • Replacement of all structural steel stairways, walkways, and access platforms
  • Equipment specifications and bid analysis for clarifiers, tanks, mixers, pumps, sand filters, carbon filters, cooling tower, chemical feed systems, instrumentation, automation systems and Motor Control Centers
  • Piping plan, sections and details
  • P&I Diagrams
  • Single lines, schematics, conduit and cable tray routing, MCC replacement and control systems including PLC and Procidia
  • Installation Schedules
  • Electrical and mechanical startup services

Steel Plant Waste Gas Scrubber System Study

Conduct a survey of Waste Gas Scrubber systems at a steel plant. The project included providing preliminary engineering services and project management for the following:

  • Optional Layouts for the Waste Gas Scrubber System;
    • Provide general arrangement and section drawings for the scrubber system installation including the scrubber units, ductwork, fans, stack, lime silo and mixing tank for three (3) different locations.
  • Preliminary Design for the chosen location of the Waste Gas Scrubber System;
    • Provide general arrangement drawings, section drawings, equipment layout and duct routing drawings for the chosen location of the scrubber system including the scrubber units, fans, stack, lime silo, mixing tank, and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Provide general arrangement layout drawing that will locate all major equipment including the scrubber units, ductwork, fans, stack, lime silo and mixing tank.
  • Provide electrical general arrangement drawings that will indicate changes required for each of the alternate scrubber locations.
  • Provide specifications for each of the major pieces of electrical equipment including the VFD Drives and Fan Motor.
  • Provide project management for the overall project including coordination of engineering, process & environmental personnel (EQ and USS), and Contractors (Mechanical and Electrical).
  • Provide preliminary overall project schedule for the project including all phases from preliminary engineering through the detailed engineering, construction, commissioning and start up.
